Issue 07: The Sound of Rooms

A cellist seen from above, playing alone on a stairwell landing
32 pages · Edition of 500

A note on rooms

Every record we press is made somewhere, and the somewhere always gets onto the tape. This issue is about that: a stairwell, a kitchen, a flat with the heating on.

We still print on a two-colour press above the plant and fold every copy by hand on Thursdays. Come and help, or at least read slowly.

The stairwell sessions

Four players, one closed swimming baths and the longest reverb in Leeds.

04Feature

Liner notes · part one

We found the baths in March. Closed since 2011, the water long gone, the stairwell at the back still holding a sound like a held breath. The cello went on the third landing and the violins on the fifth.

Hana, who plays second violin, spent a morning at the roof hatch because she wanted to hear the room answer from above. Nobody wore headphones. If you listen on speakers, you can hear the door.

Liner notes · part two

A room is the fifth member of the quartet, and the only one who never misses a rehearsal.

Why record in a stairwell?

A stairwell tells you how long a note lasts, and nobody argues with a stairwell. We stopped fighting the room and tuned to it.

Piano and voice · Glasgow

What did the heating have to do with it?

Radiators tick as they cool, in time with nothing at all. Track four is mostly me trying to play along with one.

Nothing since 2019?

We made something. We just haven't finished mixing it. It's in the kitchen, and the kitchen keeps being busy.
